At least some people have faith that the economy is turning around. In today's RV Daily Report, there were announcements of two specialty RV parks.
One is a shooting park opening in Las Vegas opening December 19 at a cost of $61 million for the first phase. That's a big investment that wouldn't be made if it wasn't expected to be profitable.
In the other announcement, 13 RV parks will become branded NASCAR RV Resorts. They will incorporate a full NASCAR experience for campers, including live NASCAR races shown on giant screens. I wouldn't doubt that these RV parks are paying for the privilege of being associated with NASCAR and that they will have to spend considerable money to incorporate NASCAR standards, giant screens and branding. Obviously these RV park owners feel this investment will pay off in more stays.
I think we'll see lot of new things in the RV world in 2010. Steve Anderson, publisher and editor of Workamper News, was telling me that he attended the RVIA convention in Kentucky and saw exciting things in Jayco's new RVs. Among them were large screens that could be elevated at the push of a button for watching TV then lowered when you wanted to look out the window at the view and L-shaped couches where one section tucked under the main one if not needed. Many manufacturers introduced new models at the show. The RV industry is looking for things the consumer wants in their RVs. That's a good sign that at least the RV industry is recovering. There used to be one on Highway 87 going north out of Mesa towards Payson. I think that one closed, though that was tiny compared to this new one. You'll have to give us a report!
