George and I went back to Monhegan for two nights so we could enjoy a relaxing time and I could hike the north part of the island. George would have time to paint. Here are a few photos from this visit. Lobster buoys and traps are stacked up at many houses, getting ready for their lobster season. And the backside of Monhegan has towering cliffs. On the right is a view of Blackhead near the NE end of the island.
While I hiked, George painted. One of his subjects was the wreck of the Sheridan.
The Cathedral Trail, through the middle-north part of the island to the far coast is known for its fairy houses. The fairy houses were the worse for wear. I'm guessing the weather - snow and rain - did a number on them. I found some intact ones, however, plus a couple on the Blackhead trail.
These two trails had many mushrooms - fairy size! Gulls near the shops and hotels were not afraid of people.
On our previous visit, migrating Monarch and Painted Lady butterflies were clustered on sunflowers. Now the sunflowers were past their prime and the butterflies chose different flowers - clovers and these pretty pink flowers seemed to be their favorites. George also saw Monarchs on asters. I thought the Monarchs were gone, but on the day we were leaving, it was a fine, breeze-less day and there they were.
Monhegan has very few cars and none of the boats bring vehicles- only passengers. Your RV must be parked at Boothbay, New Harbor or Port Clyde. You can come for the day or stay in one of the hotels or houses that rent out rooms. That makes a vacation from a vacation! Jaimie Hall Bruzenak
